We so often get phone calls requiring specimen trees and our take on this is to quote a tree that is structurally formed with a clear stem of 1.8 metres and large enough to offer instant gratification. In girth terms, this is 14-16cm tree and upwards.
Large trees are referred to in direct comparison with garden centre stock that may only be 2-3 metres in height and any of our trees above 10-12cm girth may fit the requirement here. Mature, or semi mature trees are easier to define as they are classified as any tree beyond 18-20cm girth.
British Standards classify tree sizes as follows:
| Light Standard (LS) | 6-8cm girth |
| Standard (S) | 8-10cm girth |
| Select Standard (SS) | 10-12cm girth |
| Heavy standard (HS) | 12-14cm girth |
| Extra Heavy Standard (EHS) | 14-16cm girth |
| Advanced Heavy Standard (AHS) | 16-18cm girth |
| Semi Mature | 18-20cm girth |
The Barcham Practical Guide is as follows:
| Big / Large Tree | 10-12cm girth + |
| Instant Impact Tree | 12-14cm girth + |
| Specimen Tree | 14-16cm girth + |
| Semi Mature and Mature Tree | 18-20cm girth + |
In order to give an idea of the heights of the trees that we supply, we have produced a Barcham Guide to indicate the height of the tree in relation to it's girth is as follows:
| Girth (cm) | Height (ft) |
| 8-10cm girth | 7-9ft |
| 10-12cm girth | 9-11ft |
| 12-14cm girth | 11-13ft |
| 14-16cm girth | 13-15ft |
| 16-18cm girth | 15-17ft |
| 18-20cm girth | 17-19ft |
| 20-25cm girth | 19-21ft |
| 25-30cm girth | 20ft + |
| 30-35cm girth | 25ft + |
| 35-40cm girth | 25-30ft + |
Matching the pot size to the girth size can be taken as follows:
For Big / Large trees a 45 litre container will suffice. These are easier to handle and plant. For Instant Impact stock, 45 litre pots or 65 Litre pots are required. Specimen Trees at 14-16cm girth can be bought in our 65 litre or 85 litre containers. Lastly, semi mature or mature trees can be specified in pots sizes from 150 litre to 3000 litre depending how large you want to go. If you are ordering mature or semi mature stock, machinery is often needed for unloading and installation.
To help you dig the holes in which to plant our trees, our pot dimensions are as follows:
| Pot | Height (cm) | Width (cm) | Weight (kg) |
| 20L | 30cm | 30cm | 25kg |
| 45L | 35cm | 40cm | 50kg |
| 65L | 40cm | 45cm | 75kg |
| 85L | 45cm | 50cm | 90kg |
| 150L | 55cm | 60cm | 155kg |
| 250L | 65cm | 70cm | 255kg |
| 350L | 70cm | 80cm | 355kg |
| 500L | 75cm | 95cm | 505kg |
| 750L | 80cm | 110cm | 755kg |
| 1000L | 100cm | 120cm | 1005kg |
