Although there are many trees that can provide interest all year round, especially in Spring and Autumn, the Summer time does throw up some surprises.

There are a number of trees that flower quite late in the season and therefore provide interest throughout the summer months. Such trees include Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulip tree) of which some semi matures specimens have recently been spotted at the nursery at Barcham in full flower (June).

Other Summer performers include the prolific flower of Magnolia grandiflora (Southern Magnolia), this produces its creamy white scented flowers late in the summer and truly is a magnificent sight.

So, looking to trees that do not produce any flower in the Summer months, as this is often very short lived, our tree of the moment is Acer platanoides ‘Princeton Gold’, also known as ‘Prigo’.  Essentially a golden leaved Norway Maple, this clone produces stunning lime and yellow green foliage that is held throughout the summer months, contrasting fantastically with other trees within the landscape.
